It started with one man, one idea.

MESO was founded by Odd Karsten Østervold, one of the pioneers in utilizing by-products from fishery as marine feed ingredients. Working on a fishing boat in the 70s in the rough waters along the coast of Western Norway, he was frustrated to observe that only a part of the biomass of the fish was exploited. The rest of the raw material was dumped in the ocean.

Østervold decided to do something about it. He started a small-scale operation on-board his vessel, preserving and transforming fish waste (heads, viscera, frames, skins and others) into fish silage.

In 1983, the method was further developed when he established Hordafor, a leading supplier of marine feed ingredients.

The company includes a network of processing and storage facilities as well as a fleet of special vessels.

Hordafor offtake more than 100 000 tons of raw material from the fishing annually and contributes to a more sustainable aquaculture industry.
