The Meso Method™
MESO has developed a solution for harvesting, preserving and processing mesopelagic fish. MESO solves many of the challenges related to locating the fish, catching it in an appropriate way and preserving it on-board immediately to avoid the fish to deteriorate after harvesting.
-
Research
To confirm the feasibility of the MESO Method™, our mesopelagic research vessel, MS Mokstein, plays an important role. The vessel is equipped with a multitude of instrumentation and gear to map and assess mesopelagic fish resources.
The data produced shall confirm the potential of commercially exploiting mesopelagic fish.

Preserved onboard
The most unique part of the MESO Method™ is the preservation process carried out on-board immediately after harvesting the fish. The process involves using a specially developed preservative to conserve the fresh raw material. In this condition the fish is safely transported to the onshore or offshore facility, where it will be refined into prime marine aquafeed ingredients.
-
Processing onshore
MESO will create facilities onshore, staffed with local labour manpower, that will process raw materials from mesopelagic fisheries into Fish Protein Concentrate (FPC) and fish oil.
The processing of the raw material essentially follows a cooking, pressing, extraction and drying cycle producing FPC and fish oil.
-
Processing offshore
Converted supply vessels is an alternative solution for processing the fish. A compact process facility and a extra tank (picture) are installed at the topside, performing the same operations as the onshore plant.
The vessel can also take off already ensiled mesopelagic fish from Mokstein as well as fresh mesopelagic fish from other vessels. Net mending and storage of fishing equipment and spare parts could be other tasks for the floating solution. The vessel can even deliver power to shore, if needed.
