Good corporate governance is the foundation of our business

Fishery, fish feed and aquaculture requires a most careful approach.

All over the globe there are problems with overfishing, fish health, food security and environmental concerns. Simultaneously the world needs more healthy food, more new sustainable industries and more jobs – especially in areas with limited opportunities and underdeveloped infrastructures.

These are all aspects influencing how MESO approaches the aquafeed industry. Coming from the Norwegian fishing industry, care for the environment is naturally implemented in our thinking and how we perform our activities. Extensive experience and advanced technology enable a healthy and safe development at every stage of the supply chain.

With our ESG solutions (Environmental, Social and Corporate governance) we contribute to a more sustainable aquafeed industry:

  • By utilizing fish species in a way that is not in conflict with other fishing interests.

  • By contributing to increased fish quality: the high concentration of Vitamin A, Calcium, Selen, Jod, proteins and Omega-3 fatty acids in the Mesopelagic fish will improve aquaculture fish health and potentially reduce mortality and outbreaks of diseases.

  • By offering an alternative to soya, which production is responsible for serious deforestation of rainforest, especially in South America.

  • By creating jobs and income in countries and communities that may struggle with poverty and unemployment.

Global feed-demand

The world’s population has quadrupled in the last 100 years and will reach an estimated 10.9 billion people by the end of the century. To feed the growing population, crop production will need to double (The World Bank).

Fish farming production has surpassed wild catch

United Nations predicts that more than half of the forecasted growth in world population will come in Africa, with an estimated rise in population of 2.2 billion within 2050. Next is Asia before Latin America and North America. Europe is the only region anticipated to have a lower population in 2050 than today.

United Nations has determined that seafood has a vital role to play in feeding the rapidly growing global population, providing a healthy, affordable source of protein to the people.

Because access to wild fish recourses is limited, the growing demand for fish must be filled by aquaculture. Fish farming production has already surpassed wild catch and will continue to play a critical role as demand for seafood continues to rise.

The demand exceeds the supply.

The challenge today is that there is not enough marine feed to meet the need for an increasing aquaculture production – the demand exceeds the supply.

One of the solutions lies in the sustainable harvesting, preservation and processing of mesopelagic fish into premium marine feed ingredients.
